The Racial Harmony Commission of the Diocese of Baton Rouge, in collaboration with the Southern University Law Center, the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University, sponsored a virtual lecture by Dr. Shannen Dee Williams, Professor of History at Villanova University.
William’s presentation was entitled: “Black Catholic Historical Truth Telling: An Essential Practice for Reparative Justice.” She is one of the foremost spokespersons for Black Catholic history in the United States.
Williams has done extensive work researching the presence and contribution of Black American women in Catholic religious orders of women. Her forthcoming book is entitled, “Subversive Habits.”
On Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., the series will continue with a presentation by Gloria Purvis, formerly the host of a popular morning program, “Morning Glory,” on EWTN radio. Her topic will be: “What Can the Church Do about Racism.”

Diocesan Prayer for Racial Harmony
God our Father, You call us to love one another as You have loved us. We pray for the conversion of hearts in our Diocese of Baton Rouge to bring about racial harmony rooted in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, strip us of our pride, mistrust and prejudices, so that we may be able to dialogue with one another to build communities where justice, peace and love flourish. We ask these blessings trusting in the infinite mercy of Jesus and the intercession of Mary our Mother. Amen.
