A comprehensive, collaborative program that meets the needs of mothers in crisis pregnancy. Volunteer parishioners will complete a 24 hour ICEA birth doula training program and commit to serving 2 mothers a year while serving in the program. Doula volunteers will work in teams of 3 to serve 1 mother directly throughout her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period. The program has been developed in tandem with the Diocese, Catholic Charities, local crisis pregnancy centers, and maternal wellness providers. Doula Training counts toward the ICEA Certification Requirement to become a certified Birth Doula.
What is a Doula?
A Birth Doula is a non-medical birth support person. They are trained to provide continuous emotional, physical, educational, and spiritual support to women throughout their pregnancy and birth of their child(ren).
Why does it matter?
The utilization of doulas is one of only 3 A-Rated evidence based practices for maternal/newborn outcomes. Current research indicates that doulas:
Members of the Volunteer Community Doula Program must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Members must commit to serve a minimum of 2, but no more than 6, mothers a year in the program. Certification as an ICEA Birth Doula is available for interested members. The training program does not, however, cover the cost of ICEA membership and certification exam.
How Does the Program Work?
Doula Training
Volunteers must successfully complete a 24 hour doula training program. Trainings will be conducted over 3 Saturdays at the Catholic Life Center. Breakfast, Lunch, and childcare will be provided for all who attend.
Developing Your Team
At the completion of training, mothers who have requested to participate in the program will meet with the volunteer doulas for a social. During this event, doula teams will be able to match with their maternal partners and begin their service together.
Walking with Mom
Volunteer Doula teams will work together to develop their schedules. This will include 2 prenatal visits, 2 postpartum visits, and a call schedule for the month of mom's due date. The details and expectations of these visits will be covered extensively during training.
