Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church was organized as a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge in March of 1979. The parish was assigned its first pastor, the Reverend Monsignor Lester Lacassagne. The 900 or so families who made up the new parish didn’t wait for a church to be completed before they began meeting for worship, but rather celebrated Mass at Shenandoah Elementary School. Construction of the new church and school began immediately, and the school and chapel complex was dedicated on December 8, 1980.
Under the leadership of Father Gerard Young, the diverse parts of the parish were pulled together through the RENEW program. The faith life of the community became the common focus. Stewardship became a way of life for the parish and service in ministries continues to grow each year.
The elementary school has always played an important role at Most Blessed Sacrament. From the first school year of 1980-81 enrollment has been at capacity. Programs have been added and enhanced every year, and the library has grown to include over 16,000 volumes.
Over the past 30 years the parish has more than doubled in size. It now serves more than 2,300 families. Under the direction of Father Michael Collins, 16 acres of land was purchased adjoining the original site. On this land was constructed a new church, administration building, and meeting rooms. The church was dedicated on January 21, 2007. The main body of the church contains enough pews to seat 940 people. Most Blessed Sacrament is a young and vibrant parish with a very solid foundation on which to build its dreams for the future.
