Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the consecration of the renovated St. Joseph Cathedral in Baton Rouge in 1970.John Cardinal Cody officiated at the consecration which was held on September 30, 1970. The present cathedral is the third church building for the parish, its cornerstone having been laid in 1853. Bishop Robert E. Tracy spearhead the renovations which lasted from 1966-70 to conform with the liturgical renewal initiated by the Second Vatican Council. It has been the last major renovation of the church.
