“I didn't know what to write about,” said Johnny to his mother a few months ago as he was puzzled from his “What I hope to do this Summer” high school English assignment before school ended.
“Well remember, Johnny,” his mother had replied, “how you once told me that you wanted us to go to see the Google Headquarters in Mountain View California!”
She went on, “So guess what? … I plan to go to San Jose for a work conference in August before school starts, so we can all go there nearby for our summer vacation and you will be able to maybe meet Sundar "Pich-'AI'” and take a tour of their facility!”
“Awesome,” Johnny replied with a beaming smile from ear to ear!
Johnny didn't tell his Mommy that before school ended, he ad surreptitiously used the Google "BARD" Chat Service to write his story, which landed him an A+!
When I was a kid in high school during the mid-70s and got lazy and behind in my reading responsibilities, I admit to using some then innovative "Cliff Notes" to cleverly write up a book report assignment in which I also aced!
Artificial Intelligence has been getting a lot of attention recently. It is an intriguing new development with so many potentials in revolutionizing all areas of human interactions.
And like any human invention, there are bound be some pitfalls that go with the benefits.
From a Catholic perspective, Pope Francis raised concerns about AI per his attendance and speeches at the G 7 Summit in Italy held in June 2024.
The pope noted that "AI must keep foremost concerns about guaranteeing fundamental human rights, promoting peace and guarding against disinformation, discrimination and distortion."
So like "Pich-'AI'" noted on a 60 Minutes episode that I just saw, Google will hopefully proceed very cautiously in their AI endeavors to include ethical and value based reviews.
A Google Robot was also shown on the 60 Minutes feature to be able to accurately retrieve an APPLE (with Biblical ties) when asked to in an experiment by Scott Pelley ... at which Vincent Vanhoucke with Google noted:
"If we can give the robot a diversity of experiences, a lot more different objects in different settings, the robot gets better at every one of them.
Now that humans have pulled the forbidden fruit of artificial knowledge..."
And Pelley replied, "Thank you. ...we start the "GENESIS" of a new humanity... "AI can utilize all the information in the world. What no human could ever hold in their head. And I wonder if humanity is diminished by this enormous capability that we're developing ...." Horcasitas, a licensed clinic social worker, is founder/owner of Prayer Care LLC in Baton Rouge.
