After centuries of connectedness to each other and the needs of those they serve, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baton Rouge LA have agreed to share community and residential space. In June of 2023, Brothers of the Sacred Heart will be moving into the Hundred Oaks motherhouse of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Within an agreed upon period, the sisters will be relocating from Hundred Oaks and the brothers will assume ownership of the building.
“Acquiring the Hundred Oaks property allows us to take care of our brothers in a better way” said Brother Ronald Hingle SC, provincial of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Partnering with the sisters and transferring ownership to the brothers helps both groups of these vowed religious men and women to address their needs and concerns. Sr. Kathy Brazda of the Congregation of St. Joseph responds, “We are grateful to form a new and vibrant community with the brothers that gives our motherhouse a new and special purpose. Our agreement with the brothers allows us the time to discern the best future for our sisters in Baton Rouge.”
Both the brothers and the sisters have historical roots that go back to the persecutions of the French Revolution and their work together in Lyon, France with women and orphans. Today, both the Congregation of St. Joseph and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart sponsor high schools in Baton Rouge and other locations in the United States and abroad. Both organizations' ministry work remains vibrant and responsive to the needs of the most vulnerable.
