Regarding Dr. John Meinert’s article defending Pope Francis’ writing on the atomic bombs, I find it to be really inappropriately timed. It seems unnecessary right now to publish what will be widely perceived by our elderly as a ‘shame on you’ editorial for their celebrating the end to World War II as a result of the atomic bombs.
Without living with the stress of having a loved one off to war, our young author cannot grasp what that generation was dealing with. Considering our seniors’ continuing COVID-19 battle with acute fear and lockdown loneliness, could his chiding not have been deferred to a less stressful time?
Rather than brow beating the United States yet again about our history (the same United States that is by far the largest contributor to the global Catholic Church), would it be possible to write a more uplifting article on the unheralded sacrifices that America made post war? We could start by educating the masses on the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine.
