Two years later than planned, one of Germany’s most treasured traditions is returning for its 42nd performance.
The Oberammergau Passion Play, performed on an open-air stage every 10 years in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau, is scheduled May 14–Oct. 2.
Tucked away among scenic mountains and stunning meadows that offer breathtaking vistas, Oberammergau is a small town located approximately 60 miles from Berlin. Woodworking is the town’s calling card but it may best be known for its decennial celebration of Christ’s Passion.
According to tradition, the Passion Play has been performed every 10 years since 1634. It was during the time of the Thirty Years War that the Black Plague was sweeping through Europe, not unlike the current COVID-19 pandemic. Turning to prayer, the villagers vowed that if God spared them of the plague, they would perform the Passion Play every 10 years.
The town was spared and villagers performed the play every 10 years until 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic forced its postponement, hence the move to 2022.
More than 2,000 citizens participate, including actors, musicians and those offering technical support. There are 124 speaking roles and the music is provided by a 65-member orchestra and 45-person chorus.
The support staff includes hundreds of people, from stagehands, seamstresses, firemen, auditorium attendants and additional roles.
Because of its global popularity, tickets are not easy to obtain, so contacting a travel professional might be prudent.
Amazingly, the costumes are handmade, and in order to provide an authentic look the men grow out their hair and beards.
The play is performed five days a week in front of 4,700 people. The play goes from 2:30-5 p.m., followed by a dinner break where those in attendance can feast on pretzels, schnitzel and perhaps a German beer, which of course is served at room temperature as per the local custom.
And don’t’ forget to pack your German to English dictionary as the play is performed in German. Crowds for 2022 are anticipated to top 750,000.
Gute reise!!
