Catholic Charities Diocese of Baton Rouge (CCDBR) is making a tremendous impact in the lives of refugees and immigrants who have recently arrived in the United States. With a strong focus on providing essential support and services, CCDBR is playing a key role in helping these individuals navigate through the challenges of resettlement and integration.
Upon their arrival, refugees are greeted with a warm welcome and case management throughout their first years in their new environment. This comprehensive assistance includes employment training and placement services, English language classes, and support groups. Additionally, refugees receive initial medical and trauma screenings and cash assistance to help them get through those crucial first days. The programs we provide assist our clients as they navigate through the difficulty of resettlement into a new country. CCDBR also provides other services which are equally beneficial to our refugee clients such as our food box distribution, maternity and adoption services, and housing programs.
Catholic Charities recognizes that the transition to a new country can be daunting and overwhelming for many refugees. By providing them with the necessary resources and assistance, CCDBR serves as a bridge between uncertainty and hope. The organization’s commitment to helping refugees integrate into society not only empowers them to build a new future but also contributes to their ultimate self-sufficiency and success.
From October 2022 through September 2023, over 800 refugee arrivals were welcomed across the state of Louisiana and the state is poised to top this number in the current year. Over 70% of arrivals originate from Cuba and Haiti. Our refugee resettlement program serves humanitarian immigration statuses including Asylees, Cuban & Haitian Entrants, Human Trafficking Survivors, Refugees, Special Immigrant Visa holders, and Ukrainian and Afghan Humanitarian Parolees.
The impact of Catholic Charities work with refugees extends beyond the individual level. According to a report by the Health and Human Services Department, Refugees and Asylees have had a positive impact of over $123.8 billion on the American economy between 2005 and 2019. By supporting refugees in their journey towards self-sufficiency, Catholic Charities is not only changing lives but also contributing to the overall economic growth and prosperity of the country.
Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge is proud to be part of the welcoming legacy of the Catholic Church in the United States and is committed to providing help and creating hope in the lives of displaced populations. Through their dedication and compassion, Catholic Charities is truly making a difference in the lives of refugees and immigrants, helping them to find hope and new beginning in their journey towards a better future.
Catholic Charities is always in need of volunteers to assist with setting up apartments for new arrivals, food boxing, the refugee youth mentoring program, and much more. The organization also accepts donations of gently used furniture.
